Swiss political Status
Switzerland is often described as an independent, neutral or isolationist country. It has a direct democracy, unparalleled by any other country, which allows its citizens to vote several times a year.
In 2002 Switzerland became a full member of the United Nations. Although a founding member of the EFTA, it is not yet a member of the European Economic Area. Swiss law is now being adjusted to conform with that of the EU, and a number of bilateral agreements with the EU have been signed.
